Pastor Dave’s Weekly Musing – 4/14/24

John 2:3 (NIV) “When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

This verse shows that Mary, the mother of Jesus, knew who He was. This first recorded miracle took place at a wedding when the wine ran out. Running out of wine was an embarrassment for the host of such an event. Mary knew exactly who to turn to because she had a personal relationship with God Himself.

Several of the disciples were present at this event, but notice that they believed after the miracle, as noted in verse 11. Mary on the other hand knew that Jesus was the Messiah. Mary knew that Jesus could intervene, and she was not shy in asking Him. She makes a matter-of-fact statement about the situation to Jesus. She was bold because she knew Him.

Many professing believers have information about Jesus, but how many approach Him as bold as Mary did? How many have a deep, personal relationship with Jesus? Intellectual knowledge without practical application leaves one empty. Mary put her knowledge of Jesus into a practice, to address a need. Isn’t that what Christians are to do today? I fear too many times we are like the disciples and others in those early days, who waited till the miracle was accomplished, before choosing to act. This is not bold. This is a lack of an intimate relationship with Jesus.

As believers, God has called us to challenge people. We are to challenge people to step out in faith. However, before we do that, we ourselves must step out in faith. We must lean into His guidance. We must be willing to try new things. We must be willing to act even when we do not know all the details. We must be willing to show our faith in who Jesus really is, understanding that He is the One to turn to. We must be bold to speak the truth, and bold to approach the One who died for us. This cannot happen without relationship. Maybe we hesitate because we don’t intimately know Him. #pastordaveswm
